Gordon "Pete"
Sears grew up in Lake Placid in
the 1950's and 60's, and was
influenced by the Olympic
history of the community and the
youth sports that were provided
by the adults who took an
interest in them. He
participated in the Lake Placid
Pee Wee Hockey Association,
Little League, Babe Ruth,
American Legion baseball and Pop
Warner football programs.
While in high school, he played
four years of football, hockey,
and baseball.
Pete went on to
attend Oswego State university,
earning a degree in education
while also playing hockey and
baseball. In 1970, he was
selected to the All-American
College Hockey Team.
Intertwined with those college
years, he served in the U.S.
Army and was assigned to Vietnam
as an infantry squad leader.
Upon completion
of college, Pete was selected as
a goaltender for the 1972
Olympic Hockey Team that went on
to win a silver medal in
Sapporo, Japan. For the
next three years, he played
professional minor league hockey
in Cleveland, St. Petersburg,
and Columbus.
Pete returned to
Oswego in 1975 and taught
history and coached hockey in
the city school district for the
next 30 years, with his teams
winning multiple league and
sectional championships.
In addition to the New York
State High School Hockey Hall of
Fame, he has also been inducted
into the Oswego State University
Hall of Fame, the Oswego State
University Athletic Hall of
Fame, and the Oswego City
Fast-Pitch Softball Hall of
Fame. He has been an
active member and coach in USA
Hockey, the New York State
Empire State Games, and is a
member of the New York State
Elks and American Legion.
