Paul Swancott
grew up in the small, central
New York city of Rome, where in
1944, 1945, and 1946 he was a
member of the Rome City Youth
Hockey League Champions.
Paul played his high school
hockey at Rome Free Academy.
Playing varsity all four years
1947-51 where is was Co-Captain
his senior year. In 1950
he was named to the
All-Tournament Team for the
Hamilton College and Clarkson
College Tournaments.
Paul went on the
attend St. Lawrence University,
played varsity hockey and tennis
and was a member of the 1952 and
1955 Men' Ice Hockey Final Four
team in Colorado Springs.
He played amateur
hockey for the Rome Knights of
the Central NYS Amateur Hockey
League and the Clinton Stars.
Paul began his
hockey coaching career as the
varsity head coach of New
Hartford Central School in 1962,
coaching for 28 years until
1990. He also coached
varsity golf from 1969 to 1992.
Paul started the D1 and D2
leagues in Central New York High
School Hockey. His
coaching record stands at
245-282-10. He led his
Spartans to 5-League
Championships, 2-Sectional
Championships, and 2-NYSPHSAA
State Championship appearances.
Paul was New York Ice Hockey
Coordinator from 1979-1992 and
started the State Championships
in 1980, first in Lake Placid
and then Potsdam, Cornell, Glens
Falls and finally Utica.
Paul was elected
into the City of Rome Sports
Hall of Fame in 1996 for his
hockey and tennis
accomplishments.
