Dave Rider began
teaching and coaching at Albany
Academy in the fall of 1977. His
varsity hockey coaching career
began with the 1979-80 season
and continued for 18 years in
the New York State Public High
School Athletic Association.
During that time, he amassed an
overall record of 335-113-14
that included 8 leagues
championships and 8 Section II
championships. In post season
play, Albany Academy made 8
appearances in the final four of
the New York State Tournament.
The Cadets were state champions
in 1883, 1987 and 1991,
finalists in 1985, 1986, 1988
and 1990 and semi-finalists in
1997.
Most memorable
were the two years in 1990 and
1991. In 1990, Albany Academy
finished the year with a record
of 27-2, losing in the Division
I state championship game, 1-0,
in triple overtime to West
Genesee, but then came back in
1991 to claim the Division I
title with an undefeated 27-0
record.
After 1997,
Albany Academy began playing in
the New England Prep School
Hockey League and won a Division
II New England Championship in
1998. Dave stepped down from his
coaching position in 2009 having
coached in more than 700 games
at Albany Academy guiding them
to 427 victories.
Besides
coaching, Dave served as the
NYSPHSAA Section II chairman
from 1981-1991. He is still
heavily involved with USA Hockey
where he continues to serve in
both the Player Development
Program and the Coaching
Education Program. In 2004, he
was given the Peter Rush Award
by the New York State Amateur
Hockey Association for his long
term dedication and commitment
to the growth of youth hockey.
Dave resides in
Glenmont, NY with his wife,
Patti. He has two children,
Kevin and Kelly.
