Shaw Receives New York State Hockey Award |
Founder of the W.I.H.O.A., a Chapter of NIHOA, Horton R.
Shaw is posthumous recipient of New York State Hockey
Award.
During the fierce competition and hard hitting action of
the New York State Championship Tournament held in the
Utica, NY, the hockey community will recognize the life
of Horton R. Shaw as he is posthumously presented with a
Special Award for Outstanding Service and Dedication to
New York State High School Hockey.
Horton Shaw will best be remembered for developing young
officials, revising playing rules, and his off-ice
administration. In teaching officials, he supervised
games every night of the week, traveling to three or
four rinks in a given day. Regardless of the level, he
knew his “boys” would do the best. In fact, many of his
officials have taken part in the New York State
Championship.
As the secretary of the National Ice Hockey Officials
Association and as member of the rules committee, he was
able to work on the improvement of the game, especially
in New York.
He began officiating prior to World War II, as a member
of the Amateur Hockey Association of the United States
(later known as USA Hockey). In 1974, Mr. Shaw founded
the Westchester Ice Hockey Officials Association, and
remained its referee-in-chief until his passing in 2005.
“In WIHOA, Horton created an association that is
respected throughout the Hockey community. The selfless
time and effort that Horton put into his group is now
absorbed through 3 individuals; WIHOA, as well as the NY
Hockey community, misses Horton’s presence every day.”
says Larry Scapperotti, its current referee-in-chief.
Horton Shaw will be only the second recipient of the
Special Award for Outstanding Service and Dedication to
New York State High School Hockey.
Horton Shaw is not only missed by all the members of
WIHOA, he is missed by all the hockey community in the
New York.
